My name is Toyia (she / her) and I am a Clinical Psychologist registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board with approximately 18 years’ experience. I am also a member of the New Zealand Psychological Society (NZPsS). I moved to New Zealand in 2014 from the United States, where I have worked in a variety of settings including a university, mental health clinic on a Native American reservation, adolescent residential facilities for at risk youth, state hospitals (civilian and forensic units), and prison systems. I have also worked in the prison system here in New Zealand and, therefore, have experience working with and treating problematic behaviours. Although I primarily work with adults, I am also comfortable working with adolescents (ages 13 and up).  I also work with ethnically diverse populations.

I consider myself to be a down-to-earth person, who strives to be understanding and non-judgmental. My sessions tend to feel casual, like we are sitting and drinking a hot cup of coffee. I bring my sense of humour to my sessions. However, I also use elements of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Schema Therapy (aspects of), and mindfulness. That said, I am flexible to the needs of my clients and will use the most effective modality for that person. Some of my clients are more process-oriented, while others are more task-focused. Both are acceptable to me. I also offer phone and video sessions.

My overall goal is to create a safe, warm environment for every client. I want to be supportive and have a collaborative relationship with my clients. It is important that everyone feels heard, understood, and validated, but challenged enough to make the changes my clients would like to make. I also want my clients to feel empowered to develop the skills needed to get through difficult and painful times in life. Your pain does not have to define you. You are already strong, let me help you find your inner strength.

I also provide clinical supervision.
